This year has been crazy so far. The day job’s been super busy, we bought a house, moved, taxes, had/still have some pet health issues, etc. You know, life.
As far as my photography business goes, I’ve been working a lot on administrative things. The things that do not include taking pictures. I have also had more photographic work this year than I did last year at the same time. I’m feeling good about the business, but it’s a lot of work. And not all of it is the kind of work that makes me want to get out of bed. Lots of busy busy busy work.
One of the trade-offs I’ve made as a result of my over-abundance of “life” and “work” is putting off reading of my favorite photographer’s blogs and browsing through their images. Just now I made some time to read a post on David Hobby’s site at strobist.com – Dan in real life. Hobby is awesome, I’ve learned a TON from him. I’ve even met him and confirmed his awesomeness in person. Have I mentioned how awesome he is? Despite his awesomeness, I don’t hit his site religiously anymore because I feel like I’ve outgrown him a bit (sorry David, it’s not you, it’s me). I’ve hardly arrived in the world of photography. I can see the front door though. At least I think that’s a door over there… Anyway, it’s been a while since I learned something profound from Hobby and I’m wandering a bit off topic now. My point is that I read Hobby’s post and came away with some unanticipated inspiration. This is an amazing sensation when you haven’t had it in a while! I didn’t even KNOW that I hadn’t had it in a while. Now I want to go home and take some pictures!
My point? Besides displaying how bad of a writer I am? I (and probably some of you) need to adjust priorities. The work’s certainly important, but staying inspired and motivated is more important. I’m going to make more time for that.
