I’ve owned the Triflash for few months and only recently have I been able to fill this monster with three flashes. Up until last week I only owned two strobes. So I put two LP120‘s and an SB-900 on it and went searching for a victim…in this case, my cat Pepi. This was shot at 5pm, in the shade, iso 100, 1/250, f/9 at about 6 feet away. Yep, 5pm, at f/9. Crazy, right?!

Phoebe loves apple juice, her dinosaur, and Wow Wow Wubbzy! When she has any one of those things she typically ignores me. When she has all three, I can set up some lights and take pictures of her with no consequence ![]()
In this case, I’m using two LP120‘s. One is to her left shooting through an umbrella, triggered via pocketwizard. The second is on her right with a full CTO gel, triggered optically. Handheld and shot at a low shutter speed to let some day light burn in through the curtains.
Yesterday on Strobist, David Hobby announced a couple of new inexpensive manual strobes now on the market – New Manual Flashes.
One of those new strobes is the LumoPro LP120 (pictured below). This one looks interesting. I own a Nikon SB-900 and one functional Vivitar 285HV (I used to own two, the second one can be read about here – Burn baby burn!

If you’ve read my Burn baby burn! post you know that I’m no longer a fan of Vivitar, or Sakar for that matter. I love my Nikon SB-900, but the price is murder, I simply can’t afford two or three right now. But I still need another light or two. So I’m now very excited about this announcement.
The LumoPro is just as powerful as the Vivitar, recycle time is faster (5sec), the head size is more appropriate than the Vivtar, the head swivels, and best of all, it has FOUR built in ways to sync! Wait, I’m wrong about that. The BEST part is that it has a WARRANTY and good company/vendor backing it. Midwest Photo Exchange is a great.
I’m not going to rush out and buy any, budget isn’t allowing it. So for now I’ll wait and cross my fingers! Hopefully I can find some solid field reviews in the next few months.
