Strobist Boot Camp III: Assignment 1

by jprentice on July 6, 2011

If you’ll allow me to switch subjects from Quinceanera and children photography for a moment, I want to write about a fun project I am participating in.

But first, a little background is required. I learned a lot of my foundational lighting techniques from a very generous photographer named David Hobby at strobist.com. In order to stretch his audience (aka, fans like me) he occasionally conducts what he calls a Boot Camp. David creates a few different assignments, participants try to meet the assignment requirements, and David picks a favorite. The winner usually receives something three dimensional. Such as some kind of camera gear or training material. The point of the assignments is to grow and learn. The prizes simply provide a little motivation (and controversy, of course).

Which brings me to the above image of The Very Reverend Canon Michael A. Bamberger, my submission for the latest assignment -> Strobist Boot Camp III Assignment #1

What to do with abandoned bird eggs

by jprentice on June 29, 2010

Picture of a bird nest full of eggs

A bird moved into our house about the same time we did. She (I assume it was a she) spent a ton of time working on the above nest. We (excluding our cat) are good people and left her alone. A few weeks after the nest was completed, we stopped seeing her. We didn’t think too much of it until last weekend when I decided to take down the vacant nest. To my surprise… Click to continue →

Strobist Boot Camp II – Room Shot

by jprentice on August 13, 2009

As I’ve discussed, here and here, I’m participating in the Strobist.com Boot Camp.

The latest assignment is a room shoot. I’m not good with this kind of photography, and I don’t feel like I have the proper equipment either (i.e. super wide lens and/or a giant house). I came REALLY close to just skipping this one. But it’s important to me that I do all the assignments. So here it is! Phoebe’s bedroom:

**EDIT** I completely forgot to mention that I used my new $15 tripod! It was awesome.

On June 21st I did my first assignment for the Strobist Bootcamp. Assignment number two is due tomorrow, July 11: Strobist Boot Camp II: Assignment 2

This assignment’s subject is food and the goal is to take a picture that would convince someone on a diet to not be on their diet anymore. This was hard for me for a few reasons. For one, I’m one of those freaks with a hummingbird’s metabolism. The diet thing is currently not something I can directly relate to. Second, I’ve never shot food. And I’m beginning to learn why. Food is a pain in the neck! Granted, I was brilliant and decided to include ice cream in my submission. So I suppose at least some of the pain was self-inflicted.

I love sushi, and I love candy, so played on that and came up with the below image.

Last week I discussed an image I shot for my friend Daniel, Co-Founder of TheFullPint.com in the post Strobist Boot Camp II. It was partially to help Dan in his blog, but also as an assignment at strobist.com. It didn’t feel right shooting only half of the founders, so I shot the other one, Jon Sims, this past weekend. Below are the results.

I had never actually met Jon before and I had no idea what I was going to do when I got to his apartment. We tried a couple of ideas that were pretty fail-rrific. But eventually we worked our way to this gem. I say we because Jon played a huge role in making this picture. I’m glad that I was open to his suggestions.

I want to publicly throw out a huge thanks to both Dan and Jon. I appreciate your time and I hope you’re happy with the pictures and that you can find a use for them. This helps me a lot with building experience and exposure (it’s impossible to avoid bad photog puns, so I don’t try anymore).
